Perla Licona graduated from KIPP Houston High School in 2015 and is now attending Lycoming College in Pennsylvania where she is studying Sociology with a focus in Digital Communications and Spanish. She is particularly interested in film, which is her preferred method of presenting information. After graduation, Perla wants to work in education, possibly working with Teach for America. She has a heart for underprivileged communities and wants to help drive the education reforms in those communities. She believes that her background in sociology will help her understand the perspective of those families so that she can better meet their needs.

In general, Perla is a shy person, so she’s using her time in the call center this summer to break out of her shell somewhat. She’s gaining confidence in talking to parents over the phone and has found that, overall, she really enjoys her position. She is also excited about having the opportunity to help families discover all the education options available to them. Other than the connections she’s been able to make, Perla has been able to learn some new software and improve her communication skills, both of which she expects will be very useful in her future.

Someday, Perla wants to travel the world, making documentaries about those travels and other people’s stories.
