Veronica Martinez, known as “Vero” by her friends, graduated from YES Prep Southeast in 2013. Now she’s studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston’s Main Campus. Veronica is working hard to succeed in a STEM major, setting an example for younger girls to follow her into this male-dominated sector. Her aspiration is to lend her strength to innovation with a large engineering company like Boeing. She wants to spend the next ten years developing her career and family, possibly even starting her own company.
Veronica enjoys making a difference in her community, and it is for this reason that she is returning to the Families Empowered team this summer. This experience is helping her increase her patience and tolerance for difficulty. She’s also been able to develop her professionalism and communication skills, particularly when dealing with people from different backgrounds than hers. She’s enjoying the opportunity to make connections with others who care about the same issues as she does. Veronica believes she has been very lucky to have received the education that she did, and hopes to provide similar opportunities to others.
Veronica is looking forward to traveling the world, and she particularly wants to visit Germany. Also, she gives a shout-out to her younger sister Teresa who is joining her this year as a call center intern and to whom she owes a new pair of shoes.
