Families Empowered #PutKidsFirst at Back to School

Families Empowered and the San Antonio community celebrated the end of summer and kicked off a new year with a huge Back to School Bash at Confluence Park on Saturday.

Families received free school supplies to start the year right, including a school backpack, pencils, pens, stickers, and buttons.

“The Back to School Bash is about celebrating school and connecting the community to schools and to each other,” said Quincy Boyd, San Antonio Regional Director for Families Empowered.

“Families Empowered is proud to serve parents and put kids first this school year.”

A new report by Families Empowered shows skyrocketing demand for public charter school seats in San Antonio, which has far outpaced supply. Families Empowered, an education family service organization devoted to empowering parents to engage in a marketplace of schools, supported parents still looking for school options by welcoming school partners to help celebrate Back to School season.

Parents had a chance to talk to representatives from schools such as Compass Rose Academy, New Frontiers Public Schools, KIPP Texas Public Schools, Jubilee Academies, The Gathering Place, and Promesa Academy. The littlest students weren’t left out, as PreK  4 SA was on hand to share their network of early childhood education centers with families. Move Texas was out and about registering people to vote for the upcoming elections.

A DJ got everyone dancing and activities like face painting and games kept the crowd entertained. Lunch was served, thanks to Guerilla Gourmet.

In addition to helping families start the school year right, the event was part of a new advertising initiative to make sure that every student, no matter their zip code, has the chance to succeed.

“Progress is happening in San Antonio, but there’s more to do,” said Rachael Dempsey, Communications Director for Families Empowered. “Kids need to be at the center of our work in education, so we are out here today to put that message front and center.”
