Houston, Texas, May 18, 2015 — Over 1,730 people attended the final School Connection Fair of the 2015/2016 school year, smashing all previous fair attendance records.

Families Empowered hosts at least three School Connection Fairs each year, to connect families to schools with open seats. At Saturday’s event, parents met with representatives from Houston Independent School District, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, KIPP Houston, YES Prep and Harmony Public Schools, and 38 more schools to introduce parents to new school options.

Thanks to a new partnership with Harmony Public Schools, Families Empowered is able to offer services to a greater segment of Texas’ waitlisted parents.

“We are proud to be supporting the parents on waitlists in Texas,” said Colleen Dippel, Families Empowered’s Founder and Executive Director. “Almost 1,800 people come out for a school choice event on a Saturday. That makes one thing very clear: that this is an under-served population in need of good school options.”

In Houston alone, over 35,000 student applications are on waitlists for the current 2015/2016 school year, and the demand for school options stretches across the city. At Saturday’s event, parents came from 83 different zip codes.

Families Empowered will continue its mission of service through a summer-long Call Center, to support families in need of options for the 2015/2016 school year, and beyond. Contact Families Empowered at (713) 589-8767 if you are in need of help in your school search.
